Here my grandparents voyage from Europe to Montreal (not New York, as intended), with a toddler in tow. My Dido was a trained tailor and some Jewish men on the ship wrote a letter for him in French and instructed him to head down to the Jewish quarter once they arrived in Montreal, that they were always seeking tailors and could give him work. The lyrics also reference a scar on my grandfather’s hand– a bullet wound that he had self-inflicted to avoid serving with the Nazis in Ukraine.
